About the Gathering

There is a long-standing and deep-seated need to build a strong and interconnected national network of queer and transgender People of Color organizations, collectives and community groups.

For this reason we will gather on December 2-4, 2011 in Minneapolis, Minnesota.Picture of Minneapolis skyline with a spoon and a cherry statue

This gathering is a strategic expression of how our communities have changed society. As a part of the Racial Equity Initiative, this gathering was initially a project of Funders for LGBTQ Issues in partnership with eight foundations across the U.S. that committed to funding queer and trans people of color organizations.

Some may ask why this gathering, why now?

The answer is simple:

For many years, the mainstream LGBT agenda has put forth a short list of narrowly focused legislative issues. Yet what happens to our communities when those campaigns have been “won”? It is LGBTQ people of color organizations, collectives and community groups that have been working on a wide range of intersecting issues that form the basis for the current, and next generation, of movement building.

This gathering will also be a space for our allies in the funding community. The LGBT movement, and the funders who fund it, must gain a deeper understanding of the impact our grassroots work is having across communities of color and across the larger social justice movement.

This gathering is an opportunity for organizers of color to come together to learn skills, build community and strategize about how we will move our collective work forward.

We look forward to building with you!
